FAN CLUB HISTORY

Doctor Who fandom in Brisbane has a long history, dating back to the late 1970's when enthusiastic Dr. Who fans would organise private house parties (most of them being University students).

Early screenings used to be organised by Stephen and Maun Collins in Tarragindi in the early 80's, and then was eventually held in Bardon under the guidance of Damian Shanahan. This group was known as the Brisbane Doctor Who Local Group, affiliated with the Doctor Who Club of Australia. This club went into hiatus in the late eighties.

A new group started in 1989 headed by Trevor Gensch, Heath Mackay and Rodney Pails called the Brisbane Doctor Who Fan Club. The club initially met at the Queensland University of Technology, but had homes at the Queensland Railway Institute, the Red Cross Building and Brisbane Library. Led by various councils, the club continued until 2000, where at this time it folded.

A few years ago Steve Glasby re-ignited the Brisbane Local Group name and now holds meetings at the Brisbane Square Library. His group is affiliated with the Doctor Who Club of Australia.

In addition to the Brisbane Local Group, the name of the Brisbane Doctor Who Fan Club has been adopted by a new group of fans - Andrew Ainsworth,Dario Western, Jules Friswell, and Prue Thomason.

This group is dedicated to both the new series of Doctor Who as well as introducing the original series to a newer, younger legion of fans who weren't even born when the show was originally cancelled.

We organise monthly lunch dates in the city as well as a couple of members hosting private screenings at their homes. We also have some extra-curricular activities such as tenpin bowling nights, and also want to hold sleepover parties and conventions involving past and present people involved with the show in the future.

This group is open to people of all ages, but we envisage anyone under the age of 16 to be given their parent's or guardian's permission to participate in group activities and to post on the forum.
